Make a Mokok – June 7, 2025

A Northeast Indigenous Style Bark Basket.

About the course:

Baskets have long been an integral part of all cultures around the globe. In North America, they are made in a variety of sizes and used by Indigenous peoples as storage containers, carrying baskets and cradleboards. Bark from pine, ash, or birch was often used and sewn together with spruce root.

A Mokok is a Northeast Woodland Native American style container made of bark and stitched together with spruce roots. The bottom is rectangular, and the top is round or oval. They were originally used to harvest and store food and accouterments. In this workshop participants will learn to prepare, split if too thick, and sew spruce roots. An inner and outer rim is made by splitting a red willow stick that is bent gradually. Different stitching patterns will be discussed. If time allows, participants may embellish their baskets with a collar or applique.
